Once you've done your homework and decided that you and your family are ready to add a new pet to the clan, the next step is to begin the search for that perfect furry pal to adopt! We post all of our adoptable pets on our website on a daily basis so you can have the most up-to-date information on what animals are available for adoption. Of course, you can also come out to the SMAS during business hours to view all of our adoptable pets and spend some one-on-one time with them.

After you've decided which pet you are interested in adopting, the next step is to complete an adoption application. All adopters must complete an application and be approved for adoption before taking their new friend home. Completion of an adoption application does not guarantee that you will be able to adopt the specific pet you applied for, nor are you obligated to adopt by completing an adoption application. In the event that an animal has multiple adoption applications submitted, the decision on which applicant will be able to adopt the animal will be made based on who submitted their adoption application first.

We try our best to get applications processed quickly and can typically have them processed within 24 hours. Applicants can usually expect a phone call regarding the status of their application the day after they submit it. If you have not received a phone call within a reasonable amount of time (2 or more days), please call us!

before you adopt...

Deciding to bring a pet into your home means a major change in lifestyle. Adoption should be a thoroughly considered decision and not a spur of the moment idea. Therefore, it very important that you take time to think about the decision of bringing a new pet into the family. Before you adopt a new pet, please consider all the aspects of pet ownership and use the tips below to ensure you are truly ready.

1. Be a responsible pet owner. Careful research and planning are essential, since being a responsible pet owner requires more than just providing adequate food, water, and shelter and it is very important to research all aspects of pet ownership and see if you're up for the task. If your town has laws regarding pets, it is very important to make sure you are aware and familiar with them as well!

2. Animals are not disposable! Animals cannot be tossed to the side when they become "boring" or "too much responsibility" They bond deeply with their families and adopting a pet means making a life-long commitment, which can be up to 20 years.

3. Protect your pet's health and safety. Owning a pet costs more than the adoption fee. Keep in mind that you will need to provide your new pet with routine veterinary care, and emergency veterinary care if an accident happens!
